Horror Across the Pond

What is it with the Brits and horror these days?  They’ve been turning out genre stuff by the truckload lately.

Apparitions

Dead Set

Demons

Being Human

Is this the beginning of a new trend?  I guess the American’s have Tru Blood already.  Does that mean it’s Canada’s turn?

  1. Well, if you go the psychological route….horror based stuff is about a loss of control, an inability to control the world around you. The UK is coming out of an eight year period where they felt like they were shackled to a U.S. government that was acting in ways they didn’t like but couldn’t escape. Zeitgeist is a funny thing…

  2. To add a strictly business answer to Denis’, horror is a solid seller.

It often can be done with a reasonable budget and doesn’t need stars to sell. It generally makes it’s money back at minimum and often dips into a nice little profit.

I recently read that studios tend to keep a few horrors on their plate to help their bottom line and indies stay afloat by delivering consistant frights.

    Canada’s contribution to scary?

    A Harper Majority.

The title alone sends shivers down our spines. Good thing it’s fiction, eh?

    Cheers.

There’s a lot to be scared of. (Perhaps a few more things in Britain than here.)

The British have also had a rich tradition in horror that goes back centuries, and that has involved some of the great names of literature. I think there’s greater acceptance of it as a viable film/TV genre than there is here.
