Could someone please suggest some shows worth watching?

Mad Men is over for the season.  Entourage is about to end.  Even True Blood, about which I have mixed feelings at best, is going to end in the not too distant future.

I watch Heroes… but only out of desperation.  I heave pained sighs throughout.  I tried the Ex-List but couldn’t go back for seconds.  Chuck and Fringe are on the record cycle but go unwatched week to week.

Thank God for 30 Rock but what am I supposed to do for the rest of the week?

Please, help.

  1. Yes, definitely Life.

CBC has Dr Who reruns on Fridays. Check out Dexter. Flight of the Conchords starts in January. Californication is still going strong.

Find the IT Crowd (British) and watch the seasons. One of the best sitcoms out there.

    9021– Oh, nevermind.

Life. It’s a very interesting procedural with a great arc.

    If you haven’t seen it — MI-5/Spooks. Seasons 1, 2, and 4+ are great.

It’s mostly been a DVD season for me — re-watching Babylon 5 and The West Wing.

Ghost Hunters: Wed, Sci Fi, 9pm
(sometimes it’s lame, but when it’s not, it’s AWESOME)

    The Office

SuperNanny: Yes, it’s reality TV, but I mean…never have horrible people and their horrible children been so enjoyable.

  4. admin

Excellent, thank you both. I’m going to go put Life on record… Super Nanny, not so much.

  5. Matt

Friday Night Lights? This season is great. 1&2 are on DVD. There’s a new season on Latest Buzz on Family Channel… LOL.

  6. Andy

    It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

    The Office

    Curb Your Enthusiasm in January

The new Zach Galifinankas shows soon to follow

  7. Jasonia

Californication is a wonderful combination of comedic and emotional elements.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia – simply hilarious. The “how could they get THAT on TV?” feeling is ever present.

Dirty Sexy Money – ignore the soapy theme or the from time to time cheesy acting. It’s a kickass drama which uses a high “filthy rich” concept, and all the lead storylines are exciting and hooking. Definitely check the first two episodes out, the pilot alone doesn’t do it.

  8. Steve

Seconding Friday Night Lights, of course.

The Sarah Silverman Program is on right now and no matter what you think of her, it’s absurdly funny.

    Dexter’s on.

  9. This is my dilemma, exactly :/

I end up watching Chuck and Fringe because nothing else is on.

ALWAYS SUNNY is a staple. Even the bad episodes provide more entertainment than most “good” television.

Wow, Always Sunny is coming up a lot. Definitely going to find some of that to keep me busy.
I’d heard FNL was tanking this season, but I haven’t looked yet. I will now.
    And Sarah Silverman? Absolutely.
Look how my schedule is filling nicely. Thank you all.

  11. FNL is amazing this season. It’s an example of having a bad second season and then improving the next season (unlike Heroes).

It’s Always Sunny and Chuck (oh how I love Chuck) are also on my to watch list, along with Sons of Anarchy.

  12. admin

I’ve been watching Sons of Anarchy too… It’s nearing the season end. What do you think of it? It came out of the box really strong, but I feel it got tired real quick and resorted to stock characters and dreary storylines. That said, I’ve watched every episode.

  13. Amanda

Skins! On BBC America. It’s a show about high school with (gasp) actual teenagers playing the parts. The characters are honest, the writing is great, and the acting is wonderful (despite the fact that these guys haven’t ever acted before).

  14. Amanda

The exclamation point is mine. The title of the show is Skins – not Skins!

  15. admin

I know Skins very well, fantastic show. I written about it here often. But I’ve seen every episode at least twice. I’m waiting for series 3 now.

  16. Lee

Fire up your Bit Torrent client and get hold of Dead Set, Little Dorrit and Spooks, probably the best things on my telly lately.

Also, look out for Apparitions, Survivors and Outnumbered, all coming later this month.

  17. Despite its many faults, I’m truly enjoying “Sons of Anarchy”. They’re clearly trying to do too much with the little money they have and Ron Perlman hasn’t quite found his character. But Katey Sagal and Charlie Hunnam are real interesting — as is much of the story telling.

  18. Mark D

    Watch these amazing shows:

    Californication
    House MD
    30 ROCK
    DEXTER

  19. Callaghan

Friday Night Lights has been outstanding in this new season. Season one was superb, season two was a huge disappointment, but now season three has bounced back in a big way.

The best show on television is also the one that no one talks about. The Shield. They’re in their final season right now and anyone who isn’t watching is missing out.

Interested to see how Brotherhood shapes up after a disappointing second season.

  20. For light-hearted fare try PRIMEVAL (1st season on DVD). Yes, to LIFE.

YouTube has the whole 22nd season of NEVER MIND THE BUZZCOCKS which is the kind of game show you would never see here in the states. Very funny.

Has Breaking Bad made it out to your neck of the woods yet? It’s awesome. Bryan Cranston’s Emmy was well-deserved.

  22. Jasonia

I really hope that Sons of Anarchy will return. They’re not quite “in the zone” yet, they haven’t found out where they’re going – but I love the show, love the actors, love the premise. Definitely worth watching.

There have been a few torrents (yeah, I said the T-word) with a fantastic German (sic!) show lately: KDD, Kriminaldauerdienst. Subtitles are included. If you manage to find that you’ll find one of the best European shows I’ve ever seen – it’s a dirty, fast-paced cop show that’s utterly depressing and realistic and dramatic. Not easy to get into, but damned it’s good stuff.

  23. Aash

Sons of Anarchy has been great so far.

Kurt Sutter has really managed to transfer some of his Shield mojo to Sons, and how can you go wrong with Hamlet on wheels?

  24. Heather

I’m really enjoying Life On Mars, the American remake of the British show.

  25. Lee

There’s a brilliant new Australian comedy starting on HBO this week, called Summer Heights High, which has just finished airing in the UK. Highly recommended – by me!

Jasonia, I’m not having much luck finding KDD, but will keep trying. Speaking of Euro-Cop shows, have you seen Spiral (Engrenages?)

  26. Jasonia

Lee – I just checked and it seems the torrent has been gone for a while, so have the subtitles. Now the only possibility to get it seems to be to buy the DVDs ( https://www.amazon.de/KDD-Kriminaldauerdienst-Staffel-Manfred-Zapatka/dp/B000VCVROU/ref=pd_bxgy_d_text_b ) – but they’re in German and not subtitled, so this might be hard to understand. 😉

Funny you mention Engregages: this is the ONE show I would seriously compare KDD to, very similar in tone and style!

  27. Jasonia

I just noticed it’s “that” Lee: kudos to you, both your blog and the script archive are extremely interesting!

  28. M Foster

Nobody mentioned NO HEROICS, a great new brit-com about super heroes who are also right twats.

I also dug SECRET DIARY OF A CALL GIRL.

  29. Amanda

Oops. Sorry! I’m a new subscriber to your blog. Really enjoying it. The fact that you’re a Skins fan is just the syrup on the pancakes.

  30. Rich

I enjoy Life on Mars (I’m watching the UK version right now, can’t say about the US adaptation), Californication, House and Dexter(!)

  31. Rich

I tried No Heroics, but I found it struck the wrong nerve; too much of the juvenile side of British humour, too little reason to stick by the wimpy main characters.

  32. FNL is doing great this season (but I’m completely and utterly bias). I also really like “The Mentalist”, “Big Bang Theory”, “How I Met Your Mother” and “Bones”.
